Spanish
Intent
Barford St. Peter’s C.E. Primary School is dedicated to implementing the Language Angels scheme to establish a vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum, specifically focusing on Spanish.
Our aim is to inspire pupils through a diverse range of topics, fostering a genuine interest in foreign languages and their culture.
We believe that every pupil deserves the support necessary to reach their full potential, thereby maintaining high expectations and excellent standards in foreign language learning.
Our carefully structured curriculum prioritises the four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, ensuring grammar is introduced appropriately throughout the primary phase.
We intend to develop a library of reference materials to aid pupils in recalling and building on their knowledge, thereby enriching their overall language learning experience.
Ultimately, our goal is to equip and motivate pupils to continue their language studies beyond Key Stage 2, cultivating lifelong language learners and easing their transition into Key Stage 3.
Implementation
At Barford St Peter's Primary School, we are dedicated to delivering a high-quality foreign languages curriculum that systematically develops pupils' linguistic skills throughout Key Stage 2.
Spanish is taught by Mrs Del Rio, a specialist language teacher, ensuring all classes receive well-structured and engaging lessons.
Wherever possible, we endeavour to link Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) lessons to our learning themes, although some units are taught discreetly.
Our MFL programme integrates cultural elements, celebrating significant events such as European Day of Languages, Día de los Muertos in Mexico, Christmas in Spain, and various festivals in the Hispanic world. Each unit is characterised by clearly defined objectives and incorporates interactive games, allowing for ample speaking and listening tasks.
This not only enhances language acquisition but also fosters an appreciation for diverse cultures among our pupils, preparing them for a globalised world.
Impact
At Barford St Peter’s, we understand that "a different language is a different vision of life." Our Spanish teaching programme helps children not only learn the language but also appreciate the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Through lively language assemblies and our celebration of the European Day of Languages, we spark curiosity about different languages, helping children see how English differs from others.
By the end of Key Stage 2 in Year 6, pupils benefit from a pen pal programme where children exchange letters with a school in Spain, writing in both Spanish and English. This cultural exchange is enhancing writing vocabulary and curiosity. Our students have also participated in successful video calls with their pen pals, furthering their language skills and cultural understanding.
We also explore Spanish festivals and traditions, enriching students’ understanding of Hispanic culture. As our pupils transition to Key Stage 3, we are pleased to see a smooth and successful progression, ensuring they are well-prepared to continue developing their language skills. At Barford St Peter’s, we are committed to providing our children with the tools they need for their language journey.
